Shelving for garages can be classified into two types: free standing and wall mounted.

A variety of materials ranging from wood, pressed board, resin and metals to heavy duty wire coated with rubber are used for making of free standing shelves. Many people use wooden shelving. A very distinctive and helpful feature of using free standing utility shelves as a storage equipment in the garage is that they can conveniently be moved to any position that you consider most appropriate. When placed strategically in the garage, you can even use them as a divider, such as to separate a shop area from the rest of the garage.

Generally you get such shelves in varying depths of 12 to 20 inches. They are available in many styles, You may have them in lockable casters so that you can move them to a desired position for being locked and kept in that position. The other variety in heavy duty plastic can easily be brought to a  knocked down position for easy transportation. Solid heavy duty plastic coated wire shelves have a large capacity of holding weight and won’t get rusted even on getting wet and are therefore preferred to pressed board type for certain applications.

Quite a few materials are used for making of wall mounted shelves but ideally one should go for heavy duty shelf specially designed for storage and should be able to withstand a load of 100lbs per running foot. Heavy duty wire shelves are ideal because they do hold a lot of weight, and because of their open design you can easily see from below what is stored on shelves that are higher up on the wall. It’s a great solution for garage storaging. Another plus point of open wire design is that it facilitates movement of air, thereby reducing the problems of mold or mildew, especially under humid conditions.
