The shape of rug is the next consideration. As a general rule of thumb, circular rugs are more suited to a smaller style, say between two or three meters in diameter. The only time a larger, circular shape rug would look good is if the room size is immense.

For a bigger room, the conventional rectangular rug is perfect. It can easily be a focal piece in the room or a match to a furniture set.

There are times when it is acceptable to stand something on a small rug to give more impact. Typically this could be say; an oblong wrought iron coffee table with a clear glass top.
