Interior shutters can give a finished look to your home.  Interior shutters have been a part of interior decor for years.  Once upon a time, all interior shutters were crafted from wood.  There was no other choice.  Plastic would look too cheap and metal just wouldn’t work. In our time, though, there are diverse styles of interior house shutters and some options other than wood.

One type of interior shutter that is gaining acceptance for shoppers is vinyl house shutters.  There is no consensus over which style of shutter is better.  There are good and bad points when it comes to both vinyl and wood interior shutters. 

Wooden shutters

Wooden house shutters appear stylish and are very traditional. They bring a look of richness to any building, whether they are mounted inside or on the outside. The majority of consumers really like the style of real wood, and the fact that wooden shutters are tough and durable also. 

Wooden shutters look great, when stained or painted.  They need to be either stained or painted and sealed in advance of hanging.  Then, every couple of years, they need to be re-painted and re-sealed.  Taking care of wooden shutters requires time and money.  They are also very costly to buy, especially if you purchase them pre stained. 

Wooden shutters are also subject to mold and termites. Because they are comprised of plant matter, they will eventually fall apart. 

Vinyl shutters

Vinyl shutters are maintenance free.  They do not require any painting, staining or sealing – ever.  They come in a variety of different colors and styles and are a good-looking, maintenance free choice regarding shutters for any home. 

Regrettably, vinyl shutters can get small dents in them each time anything is thrown at them, like hail or a baseball. Although any material can be dented, vinyl seems to take more of a bruising because it is a softer material.  Many people prefer to avoid vinyl because it is less expensive and looks like it.  There are still many homeowners who favor real wood.

Vinyl shutters are, let’s face it, plastic.  Occasionally, some types are made to look like real wood, but cannot fool the observant eye. Although vinyl shutters can be more economical than wood shutters and do not need fussing over, wood shutters are most often preferred by the majority of buyers.

Your ultimate selection of house shutters will be influenced by your budget, style preferences, and how much much effort you intend to spend maintaining the shutters.  If you would prefer a shutter that needs no attention and looks appealing on or in your home, you will prefer vinyl house shutters. 

If you do not mind attending to your shutters every so often and believe they are worth a bit more money, you will probably like wooden shutters.  Whichever kind you choose, shutters can be a charming improvement to your home and can be purchased in quite a few styles, shapes and colors.  Whether you choose vinyl or wood, you will almost certainly come across the house shutters that live up to your expectations and are perfectly suited for your home.
